Asian Youth Chess- Vanessa wins, Nihal holds Sahoo

In the on going Asian Youth Chess Championship at Delhi, Vanessa D'souza of India kick started her campaign with win over Sydykova Myrzagyl of Kyrgyzstan in Under 14 girls category.

In Boys Under 14, Nihal Manjunath of India upstaged an upset by holding 2nd seeded Utkal Ranjan Sahoo for draw.

2nd Round also will be played today.

DCS talents Nihal, Vanessa for Asian Youth Chess

DCS prodigies Nihal Manjunath and Vanessa D’souza are among the selected by the All India Chess Federation to represent India in the “Asian Youth Chess Championship 2009” being organized by All India Chess Federation under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation from 2^nd to 9^th August 2009 at New Delhi.

Nihal will take part in the Under 14 Boys category and Vanessa will participate in the Under 14 Girls category. Both of their performance in the National Under 13 Chess Championship held in 2008 at Vellore where Nihal stood 3^rd and Vanessa secured 5^th has won them the selection for Asian Youth.

Nihal is studying in 10^th standard in Lourdes Central School and son of Dr.Manjunath and Dr. Veena Manjunath. Apart from National Bronze, he has also won Silver Medal in Asian School Chess, State Under 13 title, has led Lourdes Central School team which won National CBSE Championship and many more laurels.

Vanessa is studying in 9^th standard in St Agnes Girls High School and daughter of Victor D’souza and Avith D’souza. Vanessa has also won many State Championship titles and Gold and Bronze Medals in National School Games. Her younger sister Andrea D’souza is also well known chess prodigy who has won many laurels for the institute.

DCS ARCHIVES: DCS talents excel in State Championshipship

DCS talents have performed well in the recent held State Under 11 and 9 Boys and Girls Chess Championships and have brought laurels to the city. In State Under 11 Boys and Girls Chess Championship held in Bangalore from 5th to 7th June 2009 organised by United Karnataka Chess Association, DCS prodigy Pangal Gopalakrishna Nayak secured Runner Up by scoring 7.5 points in 9 rounds.


Another DCS talent Andrea D'souza scored 5.5 points in 7 rounds and was placed Runner Up in Girls category. Both have qualified to represent Karnataka in the upcoming National Under 11 Chess Championship to be held in Shimoga from 9th to 18th July 2009.

DCS ARCHIVES: DCS 1st Circuit Chess 2009- Vikram Saralaya clinches title after 3 way tie

Udupi District's top player Vikram Saralaya emerged winner in the Derik's Chess School's 1st Circuit Chess Tournament of 2009 organised on 8th February at DCS, Mangalore.

After 6 rounds, Vikram Saralaya (Udupi), Koushik R (M'lore) and Ganesh Kumar (M'lore) all FIDE Rated, were in a 3 way tie for the 1st place with 5 points each. However, tiebreak points favoured Vikram Saralaya to bag the honour. Koushik and Ganesh were placed 2nd and 3rd respectively. Another FIDE Rated player Prakash V Rao was placed 4th with 4.5 points. Young prodigies Anantharam R U(Sharada Vidyalaya) and Shabdik Varma (SDM, Ujire), who staged many upsets in the tournament were placed 5th and 6th respectively.


Among the Girls, Vanessa D'souza (St.Agnes Girls High School) won the 1st place again with her better progressive score over Andrea D'souza (St.Agnes Eng Pry) and Chrisel Pais (Ladyhill Eng Pry) who were also on 4 points each. Andrea and Chrisel were placed 2nd and 3rd in the order.

Edgar Pereira (Lourdes Central) won the 'Best unrated Player' prize. Abhijith Kamath (Sharada Vidyalaya) and Amoga Vigram (St. Theresa's Convent School) were awarded as 'Promising talents'.

In the valedictory ceremony, Sudhakar Kudva, Founder, Oregaon Scholastic Chess Federation, US distributed prizes to the winners. In his address, he praised the quality of the game displayed by the juniors and asked them to continue with determined efforts to achieve higher goals. Deric Pinto and Prasanna Rao, both Administrators of DCS were present on the occassion.

The event had witnessed participation of 34 invited players including 12 FIDE rated players.

Does Karnataka Chess belong to few?

The point in discussion here is whether Karnatakachess belongs to the small group of Parents and coaches who run affairs according to their wishes and their motifs.

*When one sees www.karnatakachess.com may think that only few names dominates in karnataka chess. But in reality many good performances by talents are either not showcased or being downplayed. This bad trend has been running since the new association overtook official status.

*They have been forming parallel association in districts where chess was already active.....have ignored the districts where there was a need for development.

*They have failed to take action on SKDCA like associations which haven't conducted any district championship.

* The official website and official blogs have been a great farce......a mockery of the system itself.

Be a choosy when you play

Derik's Chess School students are guided to be choosy when you pick a tournament/ championship. This has to be done assessing one's grade i.e Level in DCS and the Tournament / Championship standards.

Some organisers campaign vigorously to attract more entries. Beginner/ intermediate player should not end up playing a National directly and loose all confidence.

Here is a way to choose:

If you are in Level one- Don't play any! You are in process...need little more basics learning.

If you are in Level 2- You can play DCS Events if stipulated for your batch. You can also play at local events if there are age groups.

If you are in Level 3- You are ready for age group events upto State Level. Local Open events also can be good choice for a valuable exposure. Avoid FIDE Rating Events and Higher age group Championships of National level.

If you are in Level 4- You are now ready for Age Group level National Tournament / Championship. Accumulating strength gradually for rating achievement. Gradually can be exposed to FIDE Rating events.

If you are in Level 5 and above - It's high time look for a Tournament/ Championship of higher levels. Always give preference to Open group.

DCS students dominates State Inter School Level Chess Championship

A chess enthusiast visiting "State Selection trials in Chess organised by Karnataka Public Education Department in Nippani (also known as Nipani, Belgaum) from 22nd to 24th October 2008" would have found that the event was evidently dominated by the students from Derik's Chess School.

Among the 4 titles, 3 titles were bagged by either DCS Students or formerly DCS trained players. Out of the 20 qualifying berths 11 berths have been clinched by Dakshina kannada players.

In Under 14 Girls DCS Chess prodigy Vanessa D'souza of St. Agnes Eng High School, Mangalore won the title comfortably scoring 8 points in 9 rounds with unbeaten performance. She won 7 rounds and drew against her sister Andrea D'souza and Chrisel Pais. Andrea D'souza of St agnes Eng Primary School and Chrisel Pais of Ladyhill Eng Primary School were tied for 2nd place and were placed 2nd and 3rd respectively after the tiebreaker. 4th place was won by Shalon pais of St Agnes Eng Primary School.

In Under 17 Girls, although the title was bagged by Pavithra Jagthap of Bangalore, all other qualifying berths were bagged by D.K players. Riola D'souza of SVS Vidyagiri, bantwal secured Runner Up. Bhargavi Alva of St. Agnes High School won the third place. Pooja Shekhar and Raksha K of Canara Girls High School won 4th and 5th place respectively.

In Under 14 boys, DCS produced chess prodigy Viani D'cunha of St Aloysius High School won the title. In Under 17 boys, another DCS former student Gahan MG of Canara boys High SChool claimed title and Sumith Bhat of the same School won 5th position.

Prakash V Rao wins Open Rapid Chess

FIDE Rated Prakash V Rao of Canara College has bagged the top honour in the Open Rapid Chess tournament organised by United Friends, Bejai in association with Derik's Chess School, Mangalore on 18th October 2008 at Bejai church Hall.

Prakash V rao scored 7 points by notching up wins in all the rounds. Vishwas saralaya of udupi scored 6 points to secure 2nd place. Vanessa D'souza of st Agnes Eng High School won the top honour among the womens scoring 4.5 points.

Inauguration: The event was inaugurated by lighting the lamp by Nagaraja shetty, President, Karavali Abhivruddhi Pradhikara. Suresh Ballal, President North Block Congress (I) Committee and Lancelot Pinto, Corporator/ Ex Deputy Mayor, MCC played symbolic moves over the board on the inaugural. Rev. Fr. J P tauro, Parish priest Bejai Church blessed the player all the success. Deric Pinto, Administrator, Derik's chess School; C.J Lobo, President, United Friends and Prem Salian, Secretary, United Friends were also on the dais.

Prize distribution: The grand valedictory ceremony of the Tournament was held in the evening. Chief Guests of the ceremony Harsha, President, Dakshina kannada Working Journalists association and Sudhir Bajal, Secretary, Janata Dal (S), D.K distributed prizes to the winners. Event sponsors Prakash Lobo, Mrs Joyce Lobo and Sylvester Saldanha were also present on the dais. On the occasion veteran chess player and promoter Padmanabha Aithal of Siddapura was falicitated.

Results of "Independence Week " Chess Tournaments

DCS celebrating Independence spirit organised Special tournaments on 10th and 17th August 2008. The results and the final standings are given here.

10th August 2008

DCS Premier League:
The 5 round swiss league comprising 16 prominent players including 5 FIDE rated players and 2 FIDE Rated elects was won convincingly by Kaushik R of Canara College with 4.5 points. His college mate Ganesh Kumar bagged 2nd with 4 points. Unrated Chrisel Pais sprung a surprise by defeating State Under 13 Girls Champion and FIDE rated Vanessa D'souza and also holding Ganesh Kumar for draw. With 3.5 points to her credit, Chrisel won 3rd place. She was also awarded Best Unrated player and Best Girl player of the event. Halfway of the event, Monsoon Champion Sharath Gore of SDM College had led the tables with 3 points in 3 rounds. Both top two winners toppled him to bag the honours.

DCS General League : 6 round Swiss League was organised for 50 players field.

Although, there was a tie between Prakash V Rao and Ganesh Kumar both with 4 points and 13 progressive points, better cut progressive score helped Ganesh to clinch the title. Prakash V rao had to be content for the 2nd place. Defending winner Kaushik scored 3.5 points to secure 3rd place. Adithya pai of St Theresa's was awarded 'Best Under 10 player' and Suraj Prabhu of Canara High School was awarded 'Best Under 15 player'. Bhargavi of St Agnes won 'Best Girl Player" prize.

DCS General League : The general Leagues were separately organised for Under 10 and Under 15 categories.

Nihal Manjunath wins Team Silver Medal in World Scool Chess at Singapore

Derik's Chess School talent Nihal Manjunath has won the team Silver Medal in the World School Chess Championship in Under 13 category along with Patil Pratik and Pranav Zantye. Nihal secured 5 points in 9 rounds and was placed 13 in individual tally. However his valuable score helped India to pool 16 points in team tally to clinch Silver. The team narrowly missed the Gold.

Under 13 State Chess Championship- D'souza sisters dominate

DCS student Vanessa D'souza has won the State Under 13 girls Chess Championship organised by Belgaum District Chess Association Under the auspices of United Karnataka Chess Association from 11th to 13 th July 2008 at Belgaum.
Vanessa D'souza scored 5 points in 6 rounds to bag the honour. In the scintillating final round she won against her younger sister Andrea D'souza to secure first place. Andrea D'souza also scored 5 points in 6 rounds and was placed Runner Up. The result of their direct encounter helped Vanessa to clinch title, though Andrea was ahead in progressive score.
Both the sisters will represent Karnataka in the forthcoming National Under 13 Chess Championship.

These young prodigies are daughters of Victor D'souza and Avith D'souza and are studying in St Agnes english Medium School, Mangalore.

Rajath and Swathi qualify for Nationals

DCS students Rajath Rao and Swathi Bhat have qualified to represent Karnataka in the Upcoming National Under 7 Boys and Girls Chess Championship to be held in Mumbai.

In the Karnataka State Under 7 Boys and Girls Chess Championship organised by Bangalore district Chess Association on behalf of United Karnataka Chess association from 20th to 22nd June 2008 at Bangalore, Rajath Rao secured Runner Up by scoring 6 points in 7 rounds. In Girls Swathi Bhat secured Runner Up by scoring 3.5 points in 5 rounds.
Rajath Rao is son of Sri Nagendra Rao and Smt.Latha Rao and is studying in 2nd standard in Sharada Vidyalaya.

Swathi bhat is daughter Dr. Mari Bhat and Smt. Parvathi Bhat and is studying in 2nd Standard in Ladyhill English Hr Primary School.

Beside these, Daniel Marc D'souza(Presidency School) and Advaith Shet(Lourdes Central) also delivered impressive performances in the boys section.

Nihal Manjunath wins Silver in Asian School Chess Championship

DCS student, Karnataka State Under 13 Champion Nihal Manjunath has won the Silver medal in the Under 13 category in the Asian School Chess Championship organised by The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka from 3rd to 9th January 2008 at Kandy. Nihal Manjunath scored 6.5 points in 9 rounds and was placed Runner Up.

Nihal Manjunath was accompanied by his traner Deric Pinto at Kandy.

Nihal Manjunath is studying in 8th standard in Lourdes Central School, Mangalore and is son of Dr. Manjunath Shetty and Dr.Veena Manjunath.

It can be recalled that DCS students Ankitha R and Adith Jagadish had taken part in the Asian School Chess Championship in 2006 at Singapore and won laurels for India. Adith Jagadish and Nihal Manjunath also had taken part in the World School Chess Festival held in Greece in 2007 where Adith performed impressively securing 6th place.

Karnataka has emerged strongly in the younger age groups due to the training efforts by trainers like Deric who have dedicated their lives for upbringing young chess talents.

Wake up call for Associations to stop indulging in politics and promote chess in all corners of Karnataka with more integrity!

Nihal M clinches title in Premier League, Vineeth, Shishirdeep dominate general Leagues

NIHAL MANJUNATH

Nihal Manjunath, Lourdes Central School dominated the Premier League Chess tournament (July) organised on 1st July at DCS, Mangalore. He scored unbeaten 4.5 points in 5 rounds to clinch the title. Adith Jagadish, was placed second with 4 points. Scintillating game between the two had ended in a draw in 4th round. Kaushik R, Canara College scored 3.5 points and was placed 3rd. Andrea D'souza spurred a major upset by holding Adith for a draw. Suraj Prabhu also took the limelight with his gutsy performance by holding Kaushik for draw. Nihal ended Suraj's fine run in the final round.

VINEETH SHERLEKAR

In Under 15 category Vineeth Sherlekar, St Aloysius Eng Hr. Primary scored unbeaten 4.5 points to claim the title. Seema Crasta, SVS- Bantwal scored 4 points and was placed Runner Up. Shashank U, Canara High School was placed 3rd also with 4 points.

SHISHIRDEEP

In Under 9 category Shishirdeep, MRPL School, Vivek K M, Kendriya Vidyalaya and Utkarsh Salian of Lourdes Central were tied for the first place with 4 points each to their credit. Shishirdeep was awarded winner on better tiebreak score. Vivek and Utkarsh had to be content for 2nd and 3rd respectively.

The combined Districts Dakshina Kannada and Udupi always had great potential in Chess which was unearthed in recent years by DCS. The coastal belt of Karnataka was deprived of greater realms by the so-called power centre at the Capital. Established in 2001 with an aim of nurturing young talents of the combined districts, the institute has successfully raised State, National and International achievers over the years.

DCS has been regularly organizing good open and closed (Invitational) events for different age groups/ levels to provide necessary exposure and opportunities. Above all most these events were organized without much of outside support (donation or sponsorship). Instead, DCS allots certain inner funds to organize promotional activities. These events are widely publicized in media and the Institute has received tremendous moral support from the general public. Through these events DCS has also been trying inculcate professionalism among the players which shall take the game of Chess a long-way to make it a more popular sport.

It is at this juncture, there are certain vested interests and their puppets have been indulging in anti- chess activities which are very harmful for the process of Chess development. The Institute calls for the active participation of all chess lovers and promoters to annihilate these evils and take the game of CHESS to much greater scales in the combined Districts.

Speaking on the occassion, Sri.M Maheshwara Rao, Deputy Commissioner congratulated the players and also wished that pool of Grand Masters shall emerge in future from DCS.
