DCS ARCHIVES: DCS 1st Circuit Chess 2009- Vikram Saralaya clinches title after 3 way tie



Udupi District's top player Vikram Saralaya emerged winner in the Derik's Chess School's 1st Circuit Chess Tournament of 2009 organised on 8th February at DCS, Mangalore.

After 6 rounds, Vikram Saralaya (Udupi), Koushik R (M'lore) and Ganesh Kumar (M'lore) all FIDE Rated, were in a 3 way tie for the 1st place with 5 points each. However, tiebreak points favoured Vikram Saralaya to bag the honour. Koushik and Ganesh were placed 2nd and 3rd respectively. Another FIDE Rated player Prakash V Rao was placed 4th with 4.5 points. Young prodigies Anantharam R U(Sharada Vidyalaya) and Shabdik Varma (SDM, Ujire), who staged many upsets in the tournament were placed 5th and 6th respectively.


Among the Girls, Vanessa D'souza (St.Agnes Girls High School) won the 1st place again with her better progressive score over Andrea D'souza (St.Agnes Eng Pry) and Chrisel Pais (Ladyhill Eng Pry) who were also on 4 points each. Andrea and Chrisel were placed 2nd and 3rd in the order.

Edgar Pereira (Lourdes Central) won the 'Best unrated Player' prize. Abhijith Kamath (Sharada Vidyalaya) and Amoga Vigram (St. Theresa's Convent School) were awarded as 'Promising talents'.

In the valedictory ceremony, Sudhakar Kudva, Founder, Oregaon Scholastic Chess Federation, US distributed prizes to the winners. In his address, he praised the quality of the game displayed by the juniors and asked them to continue with determined efforts to achieve higher goals. Deric Pinto and Prasanna Rao, both Administrators of DCS were present on the occassion.

The event had witnessed participation of 34 invited players including 12 FIDE rated players.
