Nihal, Krupa win Rapid Chess Tournament

Nihal Manjunath of Lourdes Central School (Mangalore) and Krupa Jain of SVS English High School (Bantwal) won the titles in the Under 16 boys and girls categories respectively in the "Inter District Level Children's Rapid Chess Tournament" organised by Ashokanagar Yuvaka Sangha (Regd) in Ashokanagar Higher Primary School, Ashokanagar, Mangalore.

Top seeded Nihal Manjunath scored 5 points in as many rounds to clinch the title.Megharaj of Milagres, Brahmavar won the 2nd place with 3.5 points. Akash H of Lourdes Central won the 3rd place with 3.5 points.

In Girls, Krupa scored 3.5 points to win the honour. Raksha K of Canara Girls High School and Arpitha Rai of Nettanigmudnoor School, Puttur were placed 2nd and 3rd respectively.

In the prize distribution ceremony, Amithakala, Corporator, Ashokanagar; B.P Harishkumar; Derc Pinto, Administrator, DCS distributed prizes to the winners. Jayaram, President, AYS (Ashokanagar Yuvaka Sangha); Dayananda Shetty, Sports Secretary, AYS; Shankar Punja, Secreatary, AYS and Chandrashekhar Bhandary, Deputy Arbiter were also present on the dais.


Earlier, the event was inaugurated by Henry D'souza, Patron AYS by lighting the lamp. Ashwin Kumar, Corporator, Urwa and Henry D'souza played symbolic chess moves on the board. Narayan Suvarna, Hon.President, Ays; Jayaram, President, AYS and Deric Pinto, Administrator, DCS were also present on the occassion.

The event was conducted on the occassion of 48th Anniversary of Ashokanagar Yuvaka Sangha (Regd). It attracted 135 players across from the ditricts of D.K, Udupi, Kasargod, North Canara and Chikkamagaloor.

Bhimsen Joshi wins title

Bhimsena Joshi of Alva's PU College has won the title in the Open section with unbeaten score of 4 points in 5 rounds ( 3 wins, 2 draws) in the " Moodbidri Zonal Rapid Chess Tournament" organised by Sri Dhavala College Old Students' Association, Moodbidri in association with Derik's Chess School, Mangalore at Auditorium, Sri Dhavala College on 21st December 2008.

Nikhil Kamkar and Giridhar Bhat of Alva's Degree College won the 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

Sumana of Sri Dhavala College won the 1st place in womens' category. Chanchala S of Mastikatte won 2nd and Vibha Jain of Sri Dhavala College won 3rd place.

In the Juniors' Section ( Under 21), Birbal Sing Alva's degree College won the top honour with 4.5 points in 5 rounds. Arjun S and Dheemanth of Alva's PU College were placed 2nd and 3rd respectively.

In the Sub Juniors ( Under 15) category, Anekanth of Rotary English Medium School dominated with 4 wins in as many rounds to bag the 1st place. Kiran of BRP High School and Karthik of Rotary English Medium School won 2nd and 3rd respectively.

In Under 11 category, G Gautham of Rotary English Medium School won 1st place with 3 points in 3 rounds. S S Sagar of Rotary English Medium School won 2nd place and Kshamith of D J English Medium School won 3rd place.

In Under 8 category, Ashwin of Rotary English Medium School bagged 1st place. Sakshath Jain of D J English Medium school won 2nd place. Sathvika Jain of Rotary english Medium School was awarded 'Best Under 8 Girl player'.

In the Valedictory Ceremony, prizes were distributed by Subhashchandra Cowta, President, Sri Dhavala College Old Students' Association and veteran chess player Dr Vidyananda of Moodbidri. Prof. Raveeshkumar presided the function. Deric Pinto, Administrator, DCS; Prasanna Rao, Tournament Director and Shanthiraja Kambli, Physical Director, Srio dhavala College were also present on the dais.

Does Karnataka Chess belong to few?

The point in discussion here is whether Karnatakachess belongs to the small group of Parents and coaches who run affairs according to their wishes and their motifs.

*When one sees www.karnatakachess.com may think that only few names dominates in karnataka chess. But in reality many good performances by talents are either not showcased or being downplayed. This bad trend has been running since the new association overtook official status.

*They have been forming parallel association in districts where chess was already active.....have ignored the districts where there was a need for development.

*They have failed to take action on SKDCA like associations which haven't conducted any district championship.

* The official website and official blogs have been a great farce......a mockery of the system itself.

Nihal Manjunath wins 3rd place in National under 13 Chess Championship

Derik's Chess school prodigy Master Nihal Manjunath has secured 3rd place in the National Under 13 Chess Championship organised by Tamil Nadu State Chess Association under the auspices of All India Chess Federation from 14th to 22nd november 2008 at VIT University, Vellore.

He scored 9 points in 11 rounds with 8 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss. He was initially seeded 28th in the field of 280 players across from India. With this performance he is selected to represent India in Under 14 category in the Asian youth Chess championship in 2009.

Another DCS talent Vanessa D'souza scored 8 points in 11 rounds and was placed 5th in the Under 13 Girls Chess Championship comprising 131 players across from India.

Nihal is studying in 9th standard in Lourdes Central school, Mangalore and is son of Dr. Manjunath Shetty and Dr. Veena Manjunath.

Vanessa D'souza is studying in 8th standard in St. Agnes Girls High School, Mangalore and is daughter of Victor D'souza and Avith D'souza.

Another notable performance by mangalorean was 9th place in boys section bagged by Viani Antonio D'cunha.

SKDCA misleading Chess fraternity and Media

SKDCA ( South Kanara District Chess Association ) has once again indulged in misleading chess fraternity and media.

In recent press release, it stated that Vanessa D'souza and Andrea D'souza will attend the Free Chess Coaching Camp being organised for 3 days. In conversation with the SKDCA secretary Lydia D'cunha, the parent of the D'souza sisters had clearly infomed her that due to academic and coaching constraints both will not take part in the said coaching camp. Inspite of this SKDCA has gone ahead with names in press release.

This case of misleading chess fraternity and the media has become the custom of SKDCA. We just wonder when these people will mature?......

Be a choosy when you play

Derik's Chess School students are guided to be choosy when you pick a tournament/ championship. This has to be done assessing one's grade i.e Level in DCS and the Tournament / Championship standards.

Some organisers campaign vigorously to attract more entries. Beginner/ intermediate player should not end up playing a National directly and loose all confidence.

Here is a way to choose:

If you are in Level one- Don't play any! You are in process...need little more basics learning.

If you are in Level 2- You can play DCS Events if stipulated for your batch. You can also play at local events if there are age groups.

If you are in Level 3- You are ready for age group events upto State Level. Local Open events also can be good choice for a valuable exposure. Avoid FIDE Rating Events and Higher age group Championships of National level.

If you are in Level 4- You are now ready for Age Group level National Tournament / Championship. Accumulating strength gradually for rating achievement. Gradually can be exposed to FIDE Rating events.

If you are in Level 5 and above - It's high time look for a Tournament/ Championship of higher levels. Always give preference to Open group.

SKDCA and their Hypocrisy

SKDCA ( South Kanara District Chess association) is a parallel organisation to the pre existing Chess Association, Dakshina Kannada which was acting as the official chess body for the combined Districts of D.K and Udupi.

The Office Bearers of the SKDCA comprises most the parents of the chess players. Therefore thier interest in chess can be easily accredited to the known fact. The Secretary of the recent formed UKCA had his own hidden agenda to run the State. Formation of SKDCA is one of such sly measures for which some of the ambitious parents easily fell prey for.

It must have been more than two years after the formation of SKDCA, they have failed to cater the need of chess at grassroot level. There has been no District Level Selection tournaments/ Championship either for Open Level or for Age groups. Of course, there has been few State Championships, ironically the category Under 13 in 2007, Under 15 ( Sub junior) in 2008 were the categories belonging to the children of the office beareres ( to mention-Working President).

Chess in D.K being rejuvenated since 2001, we have are proud to claim that DCS has produced many State Champions, national and international level talents and a big list of FIDE Rated players.

Inspite of Mangalorean kids performance, SKDCA honored Bangalorean kids with motif of playing down the local talents ( Although Andrea Dsouza of Mangalore was State Champion in U-9 Girls and Shabdik Varma of Dharmastala was the State Runner Up, in National under 9 Chess Championship held at bangalore in 2007 Bangalorean Children were falicitated by SKDCA at Bangalore. ).

few things important to be discussed:

* Without any local tournaments how can the chess at grassroot level flourish?

* Where have gone the District Championships in Age Group and Open Group?

* Why there are conduction of some selective State Championships? Why not Under 7? Why not under 19? Why not Under 25?.....

* The one and only selection tournament conducted by SKDCA was for National city Championship. Was it so important?

* Why the SKDCA failed to protect the interest of the players when they were victimised for asking justice?

* How the National A chess Championship is going to help Dakshina kannada when there is nobody still at that level from the ditsrict? Remember the same budget can be used for 50 local level tournaments which can help development in a better way.

* Why the UKCA is not conducting Championships in pure classical format? SKDCA doesn't dare to question?

DCS students dominates State Inter School Level Chess Championship

A chess enthusiast visiting "State Selection trials in Chess organised by Karnataka Public Education Department in Nippani (also known as Nipani, Belgaum) from 22nd to 24th October 2008" would have found that the event was evidently dominated by the students from Derik's Chess School.

Among the 4 titles, 3 titles were bagged by either DCS Students or formerly DCS trained players. Out of the 20 qualifying berths 11 berths have been clinched by Dakshina kannada players.

In Under 14 Girls DCS Chess prodigy Vanessa D'souza of St. Agnes Eng High School, Mangalore won the title comfortably scoring 8 points in 9 rounds with unbeaten performance. She won 7 rounds and drew against her sister Andrea D'souza and Chrisel Pais. Andrea D'souza of St agnes Eng Primary School and Chrisel Pais of Ladyhill Eng Primary School were tied for 2nd place and were placed 2nd and 3rd respectively after the tiebreaker. 4th place was won by Shalon pais of St Agnes Eng Primary School.

In Under 17 Girls, although the title was bagged by Pavithra Jagthap of Bangalore, all other qualifying berths were bagged by D.K players. Riola D'souza of SVS Vidyagiri, bantwal secured Runner Up. Bhargavi Alva of St. Agnes High School won the third place. Pooja Shekhar and Raksha K of Canara Girls High School won 4th and 5th place respectively.

In Under 14 boys, DCS produced chess prodigy Viani D'cunha of St Aloysius High School won the title. In Under 17 boys, another DCS former student Gahan MG of Canara boys High SChool claimed title and Sumith Bhat of the same School won 5th position.

Prakash V Rao wins Open Rapid Chess

FIDE Rated Prakash V Rao of Canara College has bagged the top honour in the Open Rapid Chess tournament organised by United Friends, Bejai in association with Derik's Chess School, Mangalore on 18th October 2008 at Bejai church Hall.

Prakash V rao scored 7 points by notching up wins in all the rounds. Vishwas saralaya of udupi scored 6 points to secure 2nd place. Vanessa D'souza of st Agnes Eng High School won the top honour among the womens scoring 4.5 points.

Inauguration: The event was inaugurated by lighting the lamp by Nagaraja shetty, President, Karavali Abhivruddhi Pradhikara. Suresh Ballal, President North Block Congress (I) Committee and Lancelot Pinto, Corporator/ Ex Deputy Mayor, MCC played symbolic moves over the board on the inaugural. Rev. Fr. J P tauro, Parish priest Bejai Church blessed the player all the success. Deric Pinto, Administrator, Derik's chess School; C.J Lobo, President, United Friends and Prem Salian, Secretary, United Friends were also on the dais.

Prize distribution: The grand valedictory ceremony of the Tournament was held in the evening. Chief Guests of the ceremony Harsha, President, Dakshina kannada Working Journalists association and Sudhir Bajal, Secretary, Janata Dal (S), D.K distributed prizes to the winners. Event sponsors Prakash Lobo, Mrs Joyce Lobo and Sylvester Saldanha were also present on the dais. On the occasion veteran chess player and promoter Padmanabha Aithal of Siddapura was falicitated.

Results of "Independence Week " Chess Tournaments

DCS celebrating Independence spirit organised Special tournaments on 10th and 17th August 2008. The results and the final standings are given here.

10th August 2008

DCS Premier League:
The 5 round swiss league comprising 16 prominent players including 5 FIDE rated players and 2 FIDE Rated elects was won convincingly by Kaushik R of Canara College with 4.5 points. His college mate Ganesh Kumar bagged 2nd with 4 points. Unrated Chrisel Pais sprung a surprise by defeating State Under 13 Girls Champion and FIDE rated Vanessa D'souza and also holding Ganesh Kumar for draw. With 3.5 points to her credit, Chrisel won 3rd place. She was also awarded Best Unrated player and Best Girl player of the event. Halfway of the event, Monsoon Champion Sharath Gore of SDM College had led the tables with 3 points in 3 rounds. Both top two winners toppled him to bag the honours.

DCS General League : 6 round Swiss League was organised for 50 players field.

Although, there was a tie between Prakash V Rao and Ganesh Kumar both with 4 points and 13 progressive points, better cut progressive score helped Ganesh to clinch the title. Prakash V rao had to be content for the 2nd place. Defending winner Kaushik scored 3.5 points to secure 3rd place. Adithya pai of St Theresa's was awarded 'Best Under 10 player' and Suraj Prabhu of Canara High School was awarded 'Best Under 15 player'. Bhargavi of St Agnes won 'Best Girl Player" prize.

DCS General League : The general Leagues were separately organised for Under 10 and Under 15 categories.

Nihal Manjunath wins Team Silver Medal in World Scool Chess at Singapore

Derik's Chess School talent Nihal Manjunath has won the team Silver Medal in the World School Chess Championship in Under 13 category along with Patil Pratik and Pranav Zantye. Nihal secured 5 points in 9 rounds and was placed 13 in individual tally. However his valuable score helped India to pool 16 points in team tally to clinch Silver. The team narrowly missed the Gold.

Under 13 State Chess Championship- D'souza sisters dominate

DCS student Vanessa D'souza has won the State Under 13 girls Chess Championship organised by Belgaum District Chess Association Under the auspices of United Karnataka Chess Association from 11th to 13 th July 2008 at Belgaum.
Vanessa D'souza scored 5 points in 6 rounds to bag the honour. In the scintillating final round she won against her younger sister Andrea D'souza to secure first place. Andrea D'souza also scored 5 points in 6 rounds and was placed Runner Up. The result of their direct encounter helped Vanessa to clinch title, though Andrea was ahead in progressive score.
Both the sisters will represent Karnataka in the forthcoming National Under 13 Chess Championship.

These young prodigies are daughters of Victor D'souza and Avith D'souza and are studying in St Agnes english Medium School, Mangalore.

Rajath and Swathi qualify for Nationals

DCS students Rajath Rao and Swathi Bhat have qualified to represent Karnataka in the Upcoming National Under 7 Boys and Girls Chess Championship to be held in Mumbai.

In the Karnataka State Under 7 Boys and Girls Chess Championship organised by Bangalore district Chess Association on behalf of United Karnataka Chess association from 20th to 22nd June 2008 at Bangalore, Rajath Rao secured Runner Up by scoring 6 points in 7 rounds. In Girls Swathi Bhat secured Runner Up by scoring 3.5 points in 5 rounds.
Rajath Rao is son of Sri Nagendra Rao and Smt.Latha Rao and is studying in 2nd standard in Sharada Vidyalaya.

Swathi bhat is daughter Dr. Mari Bhat and Smt. Parvathi Bhat and is studying in 2nd Standard in Ladyhill English Hr Primary School.

Beside these, Daniel Marc D'souza(Presidency School) and Advaith Shet(Lourdes Central) also delivered impressive performances in the boys section.

India A Team wins title in World School Chess

India 'A' team comprising of Adith Jagadish (Mangalore, student of DCS), Abhimanyu Puranik (Mumbai), Ivana Furtado (Goa), Sweetie Patel (Gujrath), Meghana C H (Kochi, Ker) and Savtik M (Bangalore) has won the Team title amidst the strong competetion by Russia and Columbia.in the 3rd World School Chess Championship 2007 organised at Halkidiki, Greece from 27th April to 5th May.

Active participation by Russia, UK and many countries which did not take part in the World Youth Championship 2006 in Georgea made this event very strong and tougher one.

Derik's Chess School prodigy Adith Jagadish scored 6.5 points in 9 rounds and was placed 6th in Under 13 Open category. Nikologorskiy Konstantin of Russia has won the title in his category with 7 points. Adith was in a 6 way tie for 3rd place. But his progressive points could reach him only till 6th. Earlier in 2006 he had secured 5th position in Under 13 in Asian School Chess Championship at Singapore.

Another DCS player Nihal Manjunath in the same category scored 5 points in 9 rounds and was placed 28th.

Adith, Nihal were accompanied by their coach Prasanna Rao, Administrator Derik's Chess School.

Adith is studying in Lourdes Central School, Mangalore; he is son of Jagadeesh Boloor and Bharathi Jagadeesh.

Derik's Chess School prodigies Adith Jagadish Boloor and Nihal Manjunath will take part in the Under 13 category in the 3rd World School Chess Championship being organised in Halkidiki, Greece from 27th April to 6th May 2007.

Adith Jagadish Boloor is son of Jagadeesh Boloor and Bharathi Jagadeesh. He is studying in Lourdes Central School, Mangalore.

Nihal Manjunath is son of Dr.Manjunath Shetty and Dr.Veena Manjunath. He is studying in Lourdes Central School, Mangalore.

Adith Jagadish earlier has taken part in Asian School Championship in Under 13 category in the year 2006. He narrowly missed the medal and secured impressive 5th position. He also stood 1st in the Under 12 category in a rapid event held in Singapore.

They will be accompanied by Prasanna Rao, Administrator, DCS.

X National Cities Chess Championship

Adith Jagadish (Mangalore 'B'- Team) was awarded for Best Junior Performance by outstation player in 10th National Cities Chess Championship held in Chennai from 11th to 15th February 2007.

Mangalore 'A' and 'B' Teams led by Vikram Saralaya and Prasanna B.R respectively scored 16 points each and finished 13th and 14th.

Vikram Saralaya wins 2nd DCS Circuit Chess

VIKRAM SARALAYA

Vikram Saralaya, top most active FIDE rated player of the combined districts has won Premier league category in the 2nd DCS Circuit Chess Tournament organised on 4th February at DCS, Mannagudda. He scored effortless 9 points in 9 rounds to clinch the title.

2nd place was bagged by Rathnavarma Bunnu from Dharmasthala with 7 points. Another FIDE rated player in the field Nihal Manjunath, Lourdes Central School had to be content for 3rd place with 6.5 points.

10 invited senior and junior players have taken part in this category which was conducted in round robin system.

Suraj Prabhu

In another category, 7 round swiss league was won by Suraj Prabhu, Canara Main with 6.5 points. Pampa Peraje, Konaje won the 2nd place scoring 6 points. Rammohan Bhandary of Lourdes Central School scored 5.5 points and was placed 3rd. Uthkarsh Salian of Lourdes Central School was awarded best under 10 player.

32 invited junior players had taken part in this category. Prizes were distributed by Capt.Walter Pereira, GENMAR, USA.
