Nihal Manjunath wins 3rd place in National under 13 Chess Championship

Derik's Chess school prodigy Master Nihal Manjunath has secured 3rd place in the National Under 13 Chess Championship organised by Tamil Nadu State Chess Association under the auspices of All India Chess Federation from 14th to 22nd november 2008 at VIT University, Vellore.

He scored 9 points in 11 rounds with 8 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss. He was initially seeded 28th in the field of 280 players across from India. With this performance he is selected to represent India in Under 14 category in the Asian youth Chess championship in 2009.

Another DCS talent Vanessa D'souza scored 8 points in 11 rounds and was placed 5th in the Under 13 Girls Chess Championship comprising 131 players across from India.

Nihal is studying in 9th standard in Lourdes Central school, Mangalore and is son of Dr. Manjunath Shetty and Dr. Veena Manjunath.

Vanessa D'souza is studying in 8th standard in St. Agnes Girls High School, Mangalore and is daughter of Victor D'souza and Avith D'souza.

Another notable performance by mangalorean was 9th place in boys section bagged by Viani Antonio D'cunha.
