The Pride of Mangalore chess community, Vanessa D'souza is one of the rarest flower in Mangalore chess garden. She was the State Champion in Under 11 Girls category last year in Shimoga. She is also Gold Medalist in National Inter school Chess Championship in 2006. Last year she performed very impressively in Under 11 Girls National Chess Championship in Chennai where she defeated many well known players in National circuits and stood 9th.She has been consistently doing well in the State chess circuit.
12 year old Vanessa, taking part in the State Under 13 Girls Chess Championship being organised by SKDCA at Karnataka Bank Employees Association Hall, Bejai, Mangalore. In the field there are 2 FIDE Rated players after whom Vanessa should have been a natural choice for 3rd seed. Initial seeding is given to the players before pairing 1st round to avoid clashing of top players in early stage. But Vanessa was seeded 8th in the 1st Round in the 24 players list. When it was brought to the notice, arbiters did not rectify the error and continued with the 1st Round. After the 1st Round, there were 11 players in the field with 1 point each and as per the FIDE Swiss system 1 st player will meet 6, 2nd player will meet 7 so on. But to the shock of Vanessa she was paired against the top seeded Shristi J Shetty in 2nd round itself. breaking all logics 1 vs 8? How it would come? It was too late to protest as the pairing was displayed in the last minute of the next round to begin . When Arbiters were inquired a vague and arrogant answer came stating her seeding was been changed from 8 to 6. that too without prior notice of anyone. the intention was clear to make her meet the top seed early. Definitely much weaker players who have been seeded higher to her are the beneficiaries.
Organisers and the arbiters have been very harsh on this upcoming talent with this biased seeding.
