WE DID IT!

DCS players representing LOURDES CENTRAL SCHOOL have won the Under 14 Team Championship title in the NATIONAL LEVEL CBSE CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2007- 08 organized by Modern School, Nanganallur, Chennai from 29th October to 3rd November 2007.

The team comprised Nihal Manjunath (Captain), Adith Jagadish, Yashas Salian, Rammohan Bhandari and Akash Harendranath.

The team had scored 19.5 points in 6 rounds and buchholz score 82.5 to secure the title.

Highlights of this feat:

  • Both the top players of the team- Adith Jagadish and Nihal Manjunath remained unbeaten.
  • The new face of the team Rammohan performed very impressively with 3.5 points in 4 rounds.
  • The team had failed to qualify in South Zone last year by a narrow margin. This year in its maiden entry to Nationals itself the team won the laurels.
  • The team had lost 1.5-2.5 margin to the South Zone Champions- Jawahar School, Chennai. But 3 time the team thrashed strong opponents with 4-0 score which was a bonus for the team.
  • In CBSE chess events Karnataka teams were considered as weak opponents. Normally T.N, A.P, W.B teams dominate such Championships. Anybody hardly expected this team winning title. This triumph of Mangalore players should change the perspective of others when they face Karnataka teams.
  • This is the first National Championship Title for Karnataka in the year 2007.
  • The performance signifies strong emergence of mangalorean talents in the National Chess circuits.
